Places to visit
PLACES TO VISIT IN AND AROUND NERJA
Nerja Caves

Nerja's Caves, located three kilometres from the centre of town, is a must see attraction. Discovered in 1959 by a group of Nerja schoolboys, there are two parts. Part 1, with enormous natural caverns, is open to the public, but owing to its fragile state, Part 2 is restricted to academic visitors. The caves include archaeological treasures such as paintings over 20,000 years old and other pre-historic remains. One of the caverns has been transformed into a concert hall, where many performances are staged during the summer. There are spectacular stalagmites and stalactites. The caves are easily accessible from Nerja.
No visitor to Nerja should miss this wonderful attraction
El Salvador Church

This is beautiful 17th century church, in a square just off the Balcon de Europa.
Malaga

A day trip to Malaga is very worthwhile. The town is an interesting place to visit, with a Cathedral, Moorish castle and numerous museums, in particular the Picasso Museum.
Organised Bus trips
Private bus companies in Nerja offer day trips to various locations. These include:
Granada and the Alhambra

The town of Granada is of great interest; all visitors to Nerja should take a day to visit. The imposing Cathedral and Royal Chapel, the mausoleum of Isabel of Castille and King Ferdinand must be seen.
Just outside of town is the Alhambra Palace, a world famous historic site. Dating back to the 9th Century, this is an outstanding example of Muslim art and architecture. The main castles and grounds were constructed in the 14th Century. After the Christian victory in the `15th Century, the Castles were allowed to deteriorate. The invading French army made matter much worse, as they destroyed parts of the structure during the French invasion in 1812.
Please take a look at our Magical Alhambra Palace page.
Gibraltar
The British colony of Gibraltar is another popular day trip, but remember to bring your passports.
Seville
This is another popular day trip, which will include a river tour of the city.
Tangiers
There is an organised day trip to Tangiers by bus and ferry. If you enjoy being hassled in Tangiers for 5 hours non-stop, then take the trip. If not, stay on the Nerja beach. We speak from personal experience.
A local place to visit, especially for those holidaymakers with young children is the Nerja Donkey Sanctuary. Here you will find very rewarding place which has specialised in taking in abandoned and mistreated donkeys, mules and horses. The sanctuary is a non-profit organisation dependent on charitable donations. Located close to the Nerja Caves, the sanctuary is well worth a visit.

Another place to visit is the Malaga Car Museum. The museum has recently been awarded the "T Mark" for its commitment to quality, certifying the effort it has made to improve client experience and satisfaction.
The "T Mark" is an initiative of the Spanish Tourism Institute and the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Regions (FEMP) aimed at improving tourist destinations. The most important of its kind in Spain, the initiative is keyed to promoting a homogeneous level of quality at destinations.
Furthermore, among other improvements carried out at the Malaga Car Museum, its facilities have been adapted to visitors with different disabilities, such as those with reduced mobility, the visually impaired and people with hearing impairment. Implemented thanks to the museum's commitment to quality and equality, this initiative allows the disabled to enjoy the collection in a very special way and, at the same time, singles it out as an example of an accessible museum.

A enjoyable trip for car enthusiasts.
Your Nerja Hotel will have full information on trips and tours available. Visitors can, of course, hire a car and visit these attractions independently.
