Festivals
The Spanish people like nothing better than a festival, and there are plenty in Nerja and surrounding resorts and villages.
16th – 17th January – The Feast of San Anton
Procession and fireworks in the town of Maro
(5 mins drive from Nerja).
February – Carnival
Three wonderful days of full colour with Chirigotas (popular songs) and a great street parade.
April – Semana Santa
Holy week with religious processions and events.
3rd May - Cruces de May (Day of the Cross)
Locals in Nerja sing and dance around handmade flowered crosses. Honey specialities Arropia (caramel) and Marcocha (popcorn with honey).
15th May - Romeria San Isidro
Outburst of joy in the pilgrimage of horses and Spanish costumes.
23rd – 24th June - Noche San Juan
Night time BBQs, finished off with the cake speciality Tortas de San Juan
16th July - Virgen del Carmen
Fishermen's feast day. Marine procession carrying the Virgin in a fishing boat. Lots of fireworks.
July - Festival Cueva Nerja
Flamenco and classic music festivals in the Caves of Nerja.
8th – 10th September - Feast of the Maravillasin
Local Saint’s day’s festivities with a fair in Maro.
8th – 12th October - Feria de Nerja
Local Saint’s days with great fairs and amusements.
